"Sunken Volcanoes" is the name of a News and Views article by Sigurjón Jónsson that just got published in Nature Geoscience. The article focuses on remarkable observations of subsiding volcanoes in response to megathrust earthquakes, which were recently reported in two independent studies in Nature Geoscience. Megathrust earthquakes cause sudden extension and subsidence of the entire neighboring volcanic arc, but the studies show that additional subsidence occurs at several volcanic areas near the M8.8 Maule earthquake in Chile and the M9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake in Japan. The explanation for this additional subsidence, however, remains somewhat unclear.
